Deflazacort 6mg tablet

Deflazacort is an oxazoline derivative of prednisolone with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activity.

 

Indications

Deflazacort used in situations where corticosteroid treatment is necessary like Rheumatoid arthritis, Juvenile chronic arthritis, asthma and other airway diseases. Deflazacort is not suitable for everyone and some people should never use it, other people should only  use it with special care.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, elderly, emotionally unstable condition, diabetes or a family H/o diabetes, gastritis or oesophagitis, hypothyroidism, kidney, liver or thromboembolic problems, ulcerative colitis. Patients receiving live virus immunisation.

Safety Profile

Adrenal cortical atrophy develops during prolonged therapy and may persist for years after stopping treatment. Withdrawal of corticosteroids after prolonged therapy must therefore always be gradual to avoid acute adrenal insufficiency. Caution required in cardiac disease or CHF (Except in the presence of active rheumatic carditis), hypertension. GLucocorticoids can cause salt and water retention and increased excretion of potassium. Diabetes mellitus or a family history, osteoporosis, myasthenia gravis, renal insufficiency. Psychotic tendency, epilepsy. Previous corticosteroid-induced myopathy. Ocular herpes simplex.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactations

If the benefits to the mother and child outweigh the risks.

Adverse Effects

Adrenal problems, appetite gain, diabetes, eye or eyesight problems, headache, heart problems, irregular menstrual periods, nausea, oedema, pancreatitis, peptic ulcers, acne, vertigo.
